OUR INSIGHT: CONVENTIONAL TRADING SYSTEM CREATES POVERTY

Market Entrepreneur, Leh Ladakh 2009
In the world markets today, developing countries have major exports in international markets which are largely produced and distributed by international 'giants' or major local corporations. They have developed their goods into sustainable import/export industries leading to a positive impact on a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), yet individuals in such countries remain in a state of poverty and crisis. This is primarily due to poor labour standards and wages, government control, education (or lack thereof) and limited opportunities leading to the continuation of the poverty cycle.

Independent producers and community groups who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system suffer. As a result this 'missing middle' feeds the negative progression and challenges human rights amd contributes to the increase of/or stagnate cycle of poverty.

Every country has natural resources and materials unique to their land with the ability to produce rare and exotic products. These products, due to the limitations of trade, are not readily available to the world at large from the entrepreneurs in developing countries; therefore the cycle of poverty driven by the lack of financial independence persists.

To interrupt this cycle, it is essential to equalize labour rights and the creation of opportunity for financial independence in developing countries for small or independent businesses leading to a sustainable economy. This, in conjunction with conscious consumers, creates the ability to change the lives of people in developing countries by supporting the fair and ethical trading system.

Fair trade has been a proven catalyst in alleviating poverty in developing countries. By providing an individual the opportunity to create financial independence it will in turn increase access to education, health, housing, food, water and sanitation - ultimately changing the detrimental cycle of poverty.

OUR OBJECTIVES: CREATING WORLD MARKETS

L.I.B., as a non-government organization, will also benefit from the sales of the fair trade products in the sense that a small profit will be made. However, the profit made from the sale of these goods will be reinvested into L.I.B. to supplement operating costs and further allow for the maintenance of a true non-profit organization. Because our operating costs will be fulfilled through our fair trade initiative, L.I.B. will be able to apply all donations directly to program development, without requiring any percentage for administration costs.
L.I.B. FAIR TRADE STORE IS NOW OPEN!

Our fair trade program is based on the principles that trade should have a conscience of both buyer and seller to provide a greater justice to people in world labour markets.

BRINGING 'IT' ALL TOGETHER

Through our Fair Trade program we will not only strengthen the economic state of an individual, we will also interrupt the negative poverty cycle for a family and/or community. This is primarily due to the affordability and improvement of social needs such as education, health care and living conditions for future generations.

OUR VISION: BUILDING GLOBAL FAIR TRADE MARKETS AND CREATING FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

L.I.B.'s Fair Trade program is based on the following values and principles:
  • Quality and environmentally produced products
  • Production of products in a safe and healthy work environment
  • Neutralization of human rights related to working conditions, gender equality and child labour
  • Creation of jobs for disadvantaged people
  • Stimulates and invests in the development of social conditions in a community
  • Connects the world through positive trade
L.I.B.'s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs of the world will focus on creating financially stable markets for disadvantaged grass root entrepreneurs and artisans by fostering relationships and importing their goods for sale in Canada through various distribution channels under fair and ethical trade practices.

In addition to creating market opportunities, L.I.B. will also work directly with the entrepreneurs to enhance their current business affairs to create a sustainable working model. When determining the cost of a product with individual entrepreneurs, L.I.B. will consider the local costs of labour and raw materials needed to produce a product. As well, considerations also include reinvesting money into a business to further enhance the sustainability of an operation. Examples include product quality enhancement, raw material stock and increased efficiency of production.
